Anal Cancer :

Anal cancer is a malignant condition that effects the end part of the gastrointestinal system. Symptoms include pain and itching at the anus, bleeding from the anus, blood in stool, a lump in the anus, pressure in anus, increased urgency to pass stools, changed bowel habit. Common risk factors that may land you up in anal cancer are human papilloma virus (HPV), multiple sexual partners, anal intercourse, tobacco smoking, immuno suppression infections such as HIV, previous history of vagina or vulva cancer, presence of embryonic remnant called cloacal membrane (which is very rare).

Diagnostic tests include rectal digital examination, anal tests for HPV infection, anal pap smear test, Biopsy and imaging tests such as PET scan. Most of the anal cancers are preventable by following simple measures like having safe sex by using condoms, limiting the number of sexual partners, refraining from smoking tobacco. Treatment usually begin with radiotherapy or chemotherapy along with the surgical removal of the cancer.
