Cervical Cerclage :

A surgical procedure that involves placing a stitch or band around the cervix to prevent preterm birth or miscarriage , when the cervix starts to shorten and open too early during a pregnancy causing either a late miscarriage or preterm birth. It is done in cases of weakened cervix (cervical insufficiency), prior cervical surgery or trauma, congenital cervical abnormalities,short cervix(<25mm) ,multiple pregnancy, history of preterm birth or miscarriage. Risk factors include uterine abnormalities ,cervical insuffieciency ,family history etc,.although cervical cerclage is a potentially safe procedure (ususally done under local anesthesia by spinal block) it has some complications like premature labor, premature rupture of membranes,infection of the cervix, infection of the amniotic sac , bleeding etc.

Cervical cerclage is usually performed between 12-14 weeks of gestation, and the stitch is removed around 36-37 weeks. The procedure is effective in reducing the risk of preterm birth and miscarriage in women with cervical insufficiency. It is diagnosed by ultrasound examination, singleton (single baby not twins) pregnancy with spontaneous preterm birth, hysteroscopy or sonohysterography, cervical length measurement.
