Autonomic Neuropathy :
When the nerves controlling our body function, i.e., involuntary movements like heartbeat, digestion, and urinary bladder, get damaged or affected, it is called autonomic neuropathy. The most common cause for autonomic neuropathy is uncontrolled blood sugars, or it might even be caused by some underlying diseases like autoimmune disorders or infections caused by bacteria or viruses. Some of the common symptoms include difficulty in swallowing, digestion, control of the bladder, low blood pressure leading to fainting and giddiness, profuse sweating, and low blood sugar levels. Investigations like tilt table tests, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, ultrasound, and electromyography tests might also be advised. Treatment mainly focuses on treating the symptoms of the affected nerve. For example, if it is related to the digestive system, consuming small and frequent meals would be advised, and laxatives may be advised to relieve constipation. Maintaining a healthy weight with proper exercise and avoiding smoking would also be advised.
