Thyroidectomy :
Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure of removing thyroid gland. It is classified into four types based on the amount of removal of thyroid tissue. In total thyroidectomy, completely affected and enlarged thyroid gland is excised. In subtotal thyroidectomy, most of the affected thyroid gland is removed with a portion of tissue left intact. Hemithyroidectomy or partial thyroidectomy indicates removal of half of the thyroid gland or partial affected portion. Enlarged thyroid can be caused due to thyroid cancer, benign thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism and goiter. An endocrinologist or general surgeon conducts complete preoperative evaluation and performs surgical procedure with precision. After hospitalization and discharge, the patient is educated on postoperative instructions and recommended to be on lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Adherence to regular and scheduled postoperative follow-ups is deemed necessary to manage any complications.
