Thyroid Problems :
The thyroid is one of the glands in our bodies that helps regulate metabolism due to hormones. There are a few common disorders identified among those with thyroid problems. Examples include hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid where the gland does not produce adequate hormones. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism refers to the condition of an overactive thyroid, as excessive hormones are produced. Symptoms of hypothyroidism tend to start with symptoms of fatigue and weight gain and the added symptoms of sensitivity to cold, and possibly depression. Hyperthyroidism presents by the symptoms of weight loss or rapid heart rate and profuse sweating, amongst other conditions for anxiety. Other thyroid disorders include goiter which is an enlarged thyroid gland and thyroid nodules. Therapy depends on the cause. Hypothyroidism is treated most effectively with replacement by hormone, hyperthyroidism can be controlled with medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery. A treatment plan will be monitored through follow ups of thyroid functions to see if there is indeed a need for this treatment.
