Thalassemia :
Thalassemia is a blood disease that affects the body's ability to produce hemoglobin and healthy red blood cells. Thalassemia is an inherited condition that causes mild anemia. Based on the affected gene, thalassemia is classified into two types such as alpha thalassemia and beta thalassemia. In mild to moderate stage of thalassemia, the significant signs of thalassemia include bone abnormalities like osteoporosis, growth problems, an enlarged spleen and delayed puberty. Thalassemia, in severe stages, presents with severe anemia and other presenting complaints like pale or yellowish skin, urine that is dark or tea colored, poor appetite and irregular bone structure in the face. The diagnostic tests conducted to confirm thalassemia involve CBC, reticulocyte count, hemoglobin electrophoresis, iron studies and genetic testing. The management of thalassemia involves giving folic acid supplements, blood transfusions, iron chelation, luspatercept injection, stem cell transplant and bone marrow.
