Thalassemia :
Thalassemia is an inherited haematological disorder that affects the production of normal hemoglobin that carries oxygen. It results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anemia. It is caused by a genetic mutation. Types of thalassemia are alpha thalassemia, where mutation occurs in single alpha globin chains, and beta thalassemia, where beta globin chains are affected. Symptoms include bone deformities, trouble breathing, feeling cold, dizziness, dark urine, delayed growth, excessive tiredness, fatigue, pale skin, and an enlarged spleen. Diagnosis can be made by complete blood count, reticulocyte count, genetic testing, and hemoglobin electrophoresis. Treatments for thalassemia are blood transfusion, Iron chelation, folic acid supplements, and luspatercept injection.
