Stomach ulcers, also called gastric ulcers, are breaks in the stomach lining. It is caused by H.pylori bacterial infection and overuse of NSAIDs, severe physiological stress, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Symptoms may include acid reflux, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, bloating, belching, gas pain, pallor, dizziness, weakness, faintness, black blood in the poop, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, and sudden, severe abdominal pain. Factors that influence the risk of stomach ulcers are cigarette smoking, drinking alcohol, viral infections, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, bowel obstruction, and gastric infiltrative disorders. Diagnosis is made by upper endoscopy, biopsy, and upper GI X-ray series. It can be medicated with antibiotics like tetracycline, metronidazole, clarithromycin, amoxicillin and cytoprotective agents, histamine receptor blockers(H2 blockers), and proton pump inhibitors.
