Rotator Cuff injury :
An injury to the rotator cuff results in damage to that group of muscles and tendons which provide support to the shoulder joint and help facilitate an immense range of arm movements. Most common forms of injuries include tears, strains, and tendinitis caused most of the times by repetitive overhead activities or often brought on by aging or acute trauma by way of a fall on the shoulder. Symptoms include aching pain in the shoulder region, which is sudden in onset and made worse by raising the arm or reaching overhead. At times, it makes pain worse at night or with certain movements and thereby poses difficulties to one's daily functions. In some patients, weakness occurs in the involved arm, which may limit motion at the affected shoulder. Most importantly, a physical check-up coupled with radiologic tests like X-rays or even an MRI are necessary to ascertain the extent of damage. Treatment varies upon degree, which ranges from rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory drugs, injections of corticosteroids. If the tear is extreme, and the condition does not get better, surgery may be necessary to fix the tendons.
