Portal Hypertension :
Portal hypertension refers to increased blood pressure in the portal vein, which drains blood from the stomach, pancreas, intestines and spleen into the liver. Portal hypertension causes enlarged, leaky and bleeding veins, which present as blood in the vomit, blood in the stool, bloated stomach with rapid weight gain, swelling in the legs and feet and mental confusion or disorientation. The causative factors of portal hypertension include cirrhosis of the liver, granulomas of the liver and blood clots. If left untreated, portal hypertension may lead to ascites, gastrointestinal bleeding, hypersplenism, low blood oxygen, kidney failure and mild cognitive impairment. To diagnose portal hypertension, various investigations such as blood tests, imaging tests and endoscopy. The treatment methods to manage portal hypertension include endoscopic methods like sclerotherapy and banding, medications like beta blockers and vasoconstrictors, oxygen therapy, dialysis, paracentesis, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) and distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS).
