Optic Neuritis :
Optic neuritis is a neurological condition affecting eyes and is characterized by inflammation of the optic nerve. It causes significant damage to vision, color vision loss specific to red color, eye pain and vision field defects. Optic neuritis causes significant amount of pain on movement of the eyes. It can be either typical or atypical optic neuritis and pediatric optic neuropathy. It is predominantly seen more in the female population. It occurs due to underlying autoimmune conditions affecting nerves, injury to optic nerve, infections and certain medications. An eye specialist evaluates the clinical symptoms with medical history and necessary vision tests. An MRI of the brain is performed to rule out any defects of the brain or to evaluate the extent of optic nerve damage. A treatment regimen with corticosteroids, pain medications and vision therapy may significantly improve the condition of optic neuritis. Additionally, treating underlying autoimmune conditions like multiple sclerosis timely can prevent optic neuritis. A consultation with a neurologist is essential to monitor for any complications, which can be managed by surgical interventions.
