Mastectomy :
Mastectomy is the surgical procedure that will be done for the removal of one or both breasts. Mastectomy is advised for the prevention of cancer spread. Mastectomy will be mainly suggested when radiation therapy is not advised, due to the larger size of the tumor, which is more than 5 mm, in case of pregnant women who need radiation therapy, when there is inflammatory breast cancer, when there is lupus or scleroderma (connective tissue disorders), which are sensitive to radiation therapy. After the mastectomy, breast reconstruction surgery can be performed to restore the normal appearance of the breast. There are various types of mastectomy procedures, which include simple mastectomy, radical mastectomy, nipple-sparing mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, and skin-sparing mastectomy. The side effects associated with the mastectomy procedure will be swelling at the incision site, pooling of blood in the wound, tenderness, pain, neuropathic pain, numbness in the chest or upper arm, and restriction of shoulder movement.
