Larynx Surgery :
Larynx surgery, also known as laryngectomy, is a surgery that aims to remove a part or all of the larynx. Larynx Surgery is recommended to manage laryngeal fracture, laryngeal cancer, severe larynx damage due to an injury or trauma and chondronecrosis of the larynx in which radiation therapy damages the larynx. The postoperative care after larynx surgery involves speech therapy, as it helps in finding new ways to communicate. After larynx surgery, the patient communicates using nonverbal communication techniques like writing by hand, gestures, facial expressions, typing on a computer, mouthing words and sign language. For effective communication after larynx surgery, techniques like oesophagal speech and devices like electrolarynx and voice prosthesis are essential. The complications that may occur after larynx surgery include infection, blood clots, limited movement in the neck and shoulders, heart conditions, damage to the trachea or oesophagus, decreased thyroid gland functioning, breathing issues, difficulty in eating, speaking, swallowing, problems with the laryngectomy stoma and fistulas.
