ITP :
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a condition whereby the body's platelets, cells that aid clotting of blood are wrongly attacked and destroyed by the immune system. Thus, patients with ITP usually have low count of platelets compared to normal values, which may lead to easy bruising, frequent nosebleed, longer than normal time taken by bleeding from cuts, or in extreme cases, internal bleeding occurs. In some instances, they also acquire the fine, small red or purple spots on the skin called petechiae. This disease can affect either children or adults. It has been noted that it arises in children after experiencing some viral infections, whereas in adults, some develop it after being exposed to some autoimmune diseases or drugs or infections. In most of the children suffering from this disease, the disease remits without medical or therapeutic intervention whereas medical interference becomes necessary in adult patients with ITP. For minor cases, treatment is not always necessary. However, for severe cases, medications like steroids or infusions of immunoglobulin are used as these inhibit the immune response. In some cases, splenectomy may be necessary to prevent damage to platelets. Proper management of the case requires constant follow-ups by a physician or a hematologist.
