Hole in Heart :
In essence, a hole in the heart is a congenital heart defect. Two quite common types of these defects are an atrial septal defect,or ASD, and another called a ventricular septal defect, or VSD. Both of these defects occur because of an abnormal opening within the septum or the wall that separates the chambers of the heart. In ASD, oxygen rich blood is coming from the left atrium and mixing with oxygen poor blood in the right atrium, thereby augmenting blood flow to the lungs. It is similarly the case for the two between the ventricles in VSD. The symptoms vary like small holes may not present but a bigger one would create fatigue and shortness of breath and produce murmurs in the heart. They can lead to worsening complications of heart failure or pulmonary hypertension if they are not treated. The main diagnostic tool is echocardiography but treatment will be continuous monitoring, medication, or even surgical interventions to close the defect, letting normal blood circulation take place while putting less strain on the heart and lungs.
