Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is weakened so much so that it is unable to pump enough blood in order to meet the body's demand for oxygen and blood. It is a life-long condition. Normally, the body depends on the pumping action of the heart to deliver oxygen and blood to different cells of the body. In heart failure, with the heart weakened, the supply of blood and oxygen to different cells is reduced to a great extent. This results in the person developing fatigue, shortness of breath, and sometimes, cough. Day-to-day activities such as walking or climbing stairs can get very difficult. Some of the other symptoms that one may develop with heart failure are, chest pain, palpitations, and swelling in the abdomen, legs, and ankles. Many people with heart failure live a fully enjoyable life by ensuring compliance to the medications prescribed, and by leading a healthy lifestyle.
