Graves Disease :

The immune system attacks the thyroid in Graves' disease. It causes hyperproduction of it, leading to excess thyroid hormone in the body. This excess thyroid hormone leads to a state of hypermetabolic condition, resulting in hyperthyroidism. Symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism include weight loss, rapid heart rate or profuse sweating, nervousness, disturbed sleep, or sometimes bulging eyes. The thyroid can become enlarged and is termed goiter. Medical care may include medications, radioactive iodine to shrink the thyroid, or removal of a portion of the thyroid. Controls also may be used in conjunction with beta-blockers to slow heart rate. Although Graves is considered a chronic disease, appropriate treatment controls the disease very well. Routine follow up visits check the function of the thyroid.
