Esophageal varices :
Esophageal varices are swollen, weakened veins present in the esophageal lining, which may rupture and cause blood loss and gastrointestinal bleeding. This rupture induces symptoms such as tired and lightheaded which is a sign of low blood pressure, blood in stool, vomiting in blood, a feeling of weakness and pale complexion. Severe blood loss may result in hypovolemic shock. The presenting complains of esophageal varices include fast heart rate, sweating, fast breathing, anxiety, cold and clammy skin, loss of consciousness and confusion. Esophageal varices are caused by portal hypertension which in turn occurs due to liver cirrhosis, enlarged spleen, blood clots, other heart conditions and granulomas of the liver. The management of esophageal varices involves various options including supportive care like IV fluids, blood transfusion, variceal band ligatin, IV medications like octreotide, vasopressin and somatostatin, antibiotics to prevent infections and mechanical ventilation.
