Deep Vein Thrombosis :
When a blood clot is formed in any of the deep veins , it is known as deep vein thrombosis.Usually deep vein thrombosis is observed in the veins of lower limbs ,upper limbs and mesentric veins also. Deep vein thrombosis should not be left untreated as it might lead to certain complications like pulmonary thrombembolism ( clot in the pulmonary veins ) which can be fatal.Symptoms of deep vein thrombosis depends on the area where it has formed for example - swelling of the limbs (if the thrombosis has formed in limbs ) ,hardness of the limb , discoloration of the skin , abdominal pain if the thrombosis has formed in the abdomen.People with Chronic smoking ,obesity ,family history of deep vein thrombosis , sedentary life style , post surgery , are more prone to have deep vein thrombosis.Diagnosis is made by ultrasound , doppler test , CT, and MRI.Some of the treatment options suggested for deep vein thrombosis are anticoagulants , DVT stockings , and also a doctor may suggest invasive methods like IVC filter.Life style modification might also be suggested .
