Cushing Syndrome :
Cushing syndrome is a condition caused by excess levels of cortisol in the body which is also called 'hypercortisolism'. Cushing syndrome majorly affects children, teenagers, and adults at the age of 25 to 50 years. People with Cushing syndrome experience symptoms like weight gain, moon face, easy bruises, poor wound healing, high blood pressure, excessive hair growth, purple stretch marks, diabetes, fat lump between shoulders, generalized weakness, blurred vision, weak muscles, changes in libido and erectile dysfunction. It is caused by glucocorticoid medications, pituitary tumors, adrenal cortical tumors, lungs, pancreas, thyroid, and thymus tumors. It can be diagnosed through physical examination by a Health care professional, blood tests, urinalysis, CT-scan, and MRI. Treatment plans vary based on the cause of the condition, which include reduced glucocorticoid usage, surgical removal of tumors, radiation therapy and other medications. Cushing syndrome, left untreated will lead to many complications and can also be fatal hence early consultation with an Endocrinologist is recommended for better management and care.
