Cleft Palate :
A cleft palate is a congenital condition of birth, where an abnormal opening in the roof of the mouth is present from birth. When the tissue that comprises the roof of the mouth which is also called the palate fails to join up properly in pregnancy it forms an opening, which then can either be affecting the front palate, the back palate, or the entire palate. The cause is unknown but sometimes seems to be genetic or at least related to some factor involving family history and smoking during pregnancy. A cleft palate can affect baby feeding because milk often flow into the nose while feeding and also put the child at greater risk for ear infections, difficulties with hearing, and the possibility of speech. The treatment is usually to close the gap with surgery. It is usually within the first year of life in order to allow growth and development. Speech therapy, along with regular check-up with specialists, provides a good opportunity for normal growth and feeding and speech once the surgery has been done. Such children can lead completely normal healthy lives with almost negligible ongoing problems if they receive proper care and treatment by surgery.
