Cervical incompetence :

Cervical incompetence aka Cervical insufficiency is condition that occurs when cervix become thin and opens early during pregnancy. Most common symptoms of cervical insufficiency are painless dilation of cervix with rare or no contractions , premature rupture of membranes and Preterm delivery. Mostly it is an asymptomatic conditions . In some cases of cervical incompetence we see symptoms like bleeding , spotting ,abdominal cramps.

Mostly seen in second and early 3rd trimester of pregnancy. It can be due to both congenital and acquired conditions. Congenital conditions like short cervix and weak cervix due to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome . Acquired conditions like dilation and curettage , abortions , scraping of cervical tissue for biopsy . . Cervical incompetence can be treated both surgical and non surgically . Non surgically by taking best rest to avoid pressure on the cervix . but it is not safer method in all cases .Surgically with the help of cervical cerclage .
