BPH :
BPH stands for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. It is a very common condition among older men. The prostate gland enlarges with age. This tiny gland is found next to the bladder. When this gland enlarges due to BPH, It applies pressure on the urethrae that carries urine out of the body. The cause of BPH isn't known completely but it is believed to be connected with aging and hormonal imbalance. Symptoms involve painful urination, frequent or difficult to start urinating, weak urine flow and inability to evacuate the bladder completely. Generally BPH is diagnosed by imaging study like ultrasound and uroflowmetry. Treatment varies with how critical the symptoms are which may require only a simple lifestyle change, oral medicines like alpha-blockers, that can relax the prostate gland or reduce its size and reduces the difficulty in passing urine and dribbling of urine. In some cases, surgery may also be recommended to remove some of the part of the enlarged prostate so as to improve urine flow which is a procedure known as prostatectomy.
