Black Stool :
Black stools, also known as melena, indicate a problem in the abdomen. It is mainly caused due to bleeding in the GI tract. It is seen in conditions like peptic ulcers, oesophageal varices, gastritis, Mallory Weiss tear, oesophageal cancer, and gastric cancer. Foods like black liquor, chocolate sandwich cookies, blueberries, grape juice, and beets may also change the color of stools. Black poop is seen in medical conditions like unusual blood vessel formations in the oesophagus, stomach, or duodenum, ischemia, and injury to the digestive tract. Medications like iron supplements, bismuth subsalicylate, and activated charcoal can also change the color of the poop. Symptoms may include abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting, heartburn, changes in bowel habits, fatigue, generalized weakness, dizziness, and unexplained weight loss.
