AV Fistula :
An AV fistula is an abnormal communication between an artery and a vein with the bypass of the capillary circuit so that the blood goes directly from the artery into the vein. The fistulas are both naturally occurring and surgically created. In the case of persons suffering from kidney failure they are created in the arm for convenience and efficiency in accessing the bloodstream for dialysis.
Most of the patients with AV fistula present with swelling, pain or fatigue, and a pulsating sensation near the affected region. They may also suffer from reduced blood supply to surrounding tissues that could lead to complications such as heart failure due to excess flow that this causes in the circulatory system. The size and location of the fistula determine its treatment. Small AV fistulas may not be treated and followed only. Larger or symptomatic ones will possibly require surgical intervention through closure of the fistula or diversion of blood flow. For hemodialysis patients, maintaining an AV fistula is a vital requirement for long-term dialysis access.
