Alcohol addiction is a medical condition where a person is unable to control alcohol use. It can be mild, moderate, and severe. Symptoms of alcohol addiction are cravings for beverages that contain alcohol, drinking more than you need, repeatedly trying to reduce the amount of alcohol, giving up important activities because of alcohol, having a high tolerance for alcohol, having alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and drinking to avoid withdrawal symptoms. It is caused by genetics and mental health conditions like depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and hyperactivity disorder. Treatments for alcohol disorders include behavioral treatment, medication, and support groups. Complications of alcohol addiction include alcohol-induced cardiomyopathy, alcohol-induced hepatitis, alcohol poisoning, cerebellar degeneration, cirrhosis of the liver, and delirium tremens.
