Acid reflux refers to the backward flow of acids from the stomach to the tube that is connected to the throat, called the esophagus. It is caused by hiatal hernia, pregnancy, obesity, smoking, birth defects like esophageal atresia, connective tissue diseases like scleroderma, medications like benzodiazepines, calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, NSAIDs, theophylline and hormone therapy medications for menopause. Foods like chocolate, coffee, alcohol, mint, garlic and onions can also cause acid reflux. Symptoms include backwashing food into the throat from the stomach, burning to feel in the chest, noncardiac chest pain, nausea, sore throat and asthma symptoms like chronic coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Symptoms in children include excessive fussiness, difficulty sleeping, refusing to feed, small vomiting episodes, wheezing, hoarseness and bad breath.
