Thyroidectomy :
Thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of part or complete thyroid gland. Thyroidectomy is generally indicated in case of thyroid cancer and other thyroid issues such as larger thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism, goiter, and when the medications cannot control the condition. There are types of thyroidectomy such as total thyroidectomy, partial thyroidectomy, and near-total thyroidectomy. Before performing the thyroidectomy, some diagnostic tests are done, such as a CT scan, ultrasound scan of the thyroid gland, and fine needle aspiration, a type of needle biopsy. Thyroidectomy is performed under general anesthesia, then a small incision is made at the neck region and thyroid gland is removed which is infected. The surgeon decides either to remove partial or complete thyroid based on the severity of the condition. The approaches that are followed in thyroidectomy are conventional thyroidectomy, transoral thyroidectomy, and endoscopic thyroidectomy.
