Stye :
A stye is medically termed as hordeolum. It clinically manifests as a small, benign and painful lump on the eyelids. It is predominantly caused due to bacterial infections affecting the eyes, blocked oil ducts of the eyelids, low quality beauty products for eyes and poor hygiene maintenance of eyes. A stye may induce associated infective signs like redness, swelling and eye discharge. It has an increased sensitivity to touch and light. An eye specialist or a general physician may look after the clinical signs and conduct lab tests for bacterial infection. Following home remedies such as warm compression, proper eye hygiene practices and restriction of screen time may help to manage the symptoms. However, if the condition worsens, conservative medical management with antibiotic eye drops or ointment with NSAIDs is advised. In rare cases, a surgical drainage of the stye is recommended to prevent vision problems or discomfort of the eyes. Proper storage of contact lens or eye glasses helps in avoiding unnecessary deposition of debris in the eyes. It is important to follow preventive measures to reduce the chances of recurrence of the styes.
