Portal Hypertension :
An elevated blood pressure in the portal vein is known as portal hypertension. Usually the blood is collected from stomach, pancreas, intestine by the portal venous system and spleen and sends it to liver where it is filtered and sent back to heart, when there is obstruction resulting a slow blood flow in portal vein this leads to portal hypertension. Patients with long standing liver disease are more prone to develop portal hypertension. Symptoms of portal hypertension include blood vomiting, melena, abdominal swelling, fluid retention, and swelling of feet. Diagnosis of portal hypertension is done by doppler ultrasound, endoscopy, and some basic blood investigations. Portal hypertension if left untreated might lead to dilatation of the portal vein which might lead to rupture of veins and it might also be a life threatening situation. Some of the treatment options for portal hypertension include are TIPS (Trans jugular intra hepatic portosystemic shunt) and distal spleno renal shunt. Medications like beta blockers might also be advised as a part of treatment.
