Heart Burn :
Heart burn is medically termed as GERD (Gastroesophegeal Reflux Disease). It induces burning sensation in regions of chest and throat, causes chest pain which mimics the heartache, hence the condition is known as heartburn. Heartburn is also associated with regurgitation and swallowing problems. It is caused due to indigestion, improper functioning of lower esophageal sphincter, food triggers like citrus or chocolate, consumption of heavy meals, smoking, obesity and during pregnancy conditions. A heartburn induces nausea, vomiting and acidic or abnormal taste perception in the mouth due to the stomach acids. It is evaluated by a general physician or gastroenterologist by conducting endoscopy and other clinical diagnostic investigations. A treatment plan with medications suppressing acid reflux with supportive care management and lifestyle choices are recommended. Continuous monitoring is essential to address any critical signs like difficulty breathing, presence of blood in vomiting, severe chest pain and worsening of the condition. Heartburn can affect the quality of daily life if left untreated.
