Esophageal varices :
Esophageal varices are distended, swollen veins at the lower end of the esophagus. They result from increased pressure in veins carrying blood from the digestive organs to the liver and is medically known as portal hypertension. The most common cause of esophageal varices is cirrhosis of the liver, as the scarring keeps the blood away from normal routes of flow, it tries to go through the smallest veins, such as those along the esophagus. Danger of bleeding from esophageal varices is high. When these distended veins rupture there is great risk for severe bleeding which can be fatal. Symptoms may be vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, or dizziness and shock in hemorrhage. Most of the patients are asymptomatic or unaffected until and unless they bleed. Treatment involves medications which can be given to reduce the pressure of the portal veins. More severe cases may involve banding, which is used to ligate the varices, or shunt insertion that diverts the blood flow. A proper follow up with gastro enterologist would help the patient for a faster recovery.
