Endometrial Cancer :
Endometrial cancer is the cancer in the lining of the uterus (endometrium), most commonly in the glandular cells. It occurs due to various causes like hormonal imbalance in estrogen and progesterone, family history and genetics, obesity and diabetes, early onset of menstruation , late menopause, tamoxifen therapy, radiation therapy to the pelvis etc,.Depending upon the extent of the disease , uterine muscle involved, and involvement of the other surrounding tissue( lymph nodes etc,.) it is divided into stage I, II, III, IV of endometrial cancer.The signs and symptoms include abnormal vaginal bleeding (postmenopausal or heavy menstrual bleeding), spotting or discharge, pelvic pain or pressure, unusual vaginal discharge, weight loss etc, Risk factors for endometrial cancer are women over 50 yrs of age,family history of endometrial or colon cancer, obesity, diabetes,hormone replacement therapy, genetic syndromes like Lynch syndrome etc.,Diagnosis is by pelvic examination, ultrasound, endometrial biopsy, D&C, imaging tests (CT or MRI scans). Management is by surgery by hysterectomy and lymph node dissection along with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy and other palliative care.
