Ectopic Pregnancy :
Ectopic pregnancy is a condition in which the fertilized ovum develops at a site outside the uterine cavity, 95% of them occur in the fallopian tube. Fallopian tube is a narrow passage canal in which the egg passes from the ovary to the uterine cavity . There are a number of factors that lead to tubal damage and dysfunction resulting in tubal pregnancy like congenital anomalies of the tube (birth defect), prior tubal surgery, prior pelvic inflammatory disease(PID), IUCD ( intrauterine contraceptive devices), progestogen contraceptives, assisted reproduction, previous tubal pregnancy etc. Signs and symptoms include severe abdominal pain/ pelvic pain or cramping, vaginal bleeding or spotting , shoulder pain (due to bleeding into the abdominal cavity), weakness, dizziness or fainting. Complications include blleding, rupture, infertility, reccurent ectopic pregnanacy, adhesions, infections, future pregnanacy complications. It can be diagnosed with the above mentioned symptoms and ultrasound , beta hCG blood test. Management includes medications (methotrexate /misoprostol to terminate the pregnancy), surgery to remove the ectopic tissue, salpingectomy, embolization (blocking the blood flow to the ectopic tissue) and other supportive care.
