An allergy specialist is a doctor who specializes in treating allergies and immune problems. To become an allergist, one must complete 5 years of a medical degree and three years post-graduation in general medicine, followed by two years of fellowship in an allergy-immunology program. They treat conditions like anaphylaxis, angioedema, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, asthma, drug allergies, eczema, eosinophilic disorders, food allergies, hives, insect sting allergies, latex allergies, and sinus infections. They perform medical tests and procedures like skin testing, intravenous immunoglobin, chest X-rays, blood tests, and spirometry, recommend lifestyle changes, prescribe medications, perform drug desensitization, administer intravenous immunoglobin, and give allergy shots.
