Portal Hypertension :
This portal venous system connects the stomach, intestine, pancreas, spleen, and small and large intestine, helps in carrying the deoxygenated blood from these organs to the liver for filtration while collecting the nutrients and it also plays a major role in cleansing the blood. An increase in blood pressure of this system results in portal hypertension, which is majorly affected by liver damage in the form of blockage or diseases like liver cirrhosis and hepatitis, which can damage the portal system function. Progression of the disease can lead to blood vomiting, blood in stools, ascites, internal bleeding, and edema are some of the main diseases. Portal hypertension is mostly diagnosed by signs and symptoms, followed by physical examination, ultrasound, endoscopy, and CBC (complete blood count). Beta blockers like (nadolol or propranolol) may prescribed to stop the bleeding during or after endoscopy. If left untreated, this may lead to possible complications like Gastrointestinal bleeding, jaundice, hepatic encephalopathy, and infections.
