Failure to Thrive :
Failure to Thrive refers to a condition that is seen in children when their rate of weight gain is below the standard growth compared to that in children who are of the same age and sex. A child's physical skills like standing, sitting, and walking, mental and social skills, and secondary sexual characteristics are affected in children with failure to thrive condition and they develop slowly comparatively. This condition occurs due to a wide range of factors such as defects in major organ systems, chromosome abnormalities such as Turners's syndrome and Down syndrome, anemia or blood disorders, and damage to the brain or central nervous system, which can cause difficulty in feeding an infant, long-term gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal problems that result in malabsorption, metabolic disorders, cerebral palsy, complications of pregnancy and low birth weight. Failure to thrive might also be caused by situations like emotional deprivation as a result of parental withdrawal, hostility or rejection.
