Institute of Reproductive Medicine (IRM) - Salt Lake

The idea of initiating the treatment of infertility was conceived by me in 1983 following the tragic death of Dr. Subhas Mukherjee who had pioneered the delivery of the first ?test tube baby? in India and the second in the world. The initial experience was gathered at the original clinic at central Calcutta at CIT Road. A separate space was set up for the laboratory and OT purpose. In the mean time I took training at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth, Australia, under the guidance of my Australian friend Dr. John Yovich. With an increasing number of patients, and activities multiplying, it was soon realized that the space at DD block was inadequate. West Bengal Government was kind enough to allot another plot (10 cottahs) at HB-36/A/3, Sector?III, Salt Lake City, Kolkata, and a new building was constructed. The new building was officially inaugurated on 22 April 1999 Apart from delivering more than 4000 babies through ART so far, the Institute has published more than 55 scientific papers in renowned peer-reviewed journals, such as Human Reproduction, Fertility & Sterility, The Lancet, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Journal of Clinical Metabolism and Endocrinology, Journal of Assisted Reproductive Technology and Genetics, Andrologia etc. Every two months we hold a scientific seminar at the Institute, and we publish a quarterly bulletin, which contains current topics related to ART and reproductive medicine.
