Failure to Thrive :
Failure to Thrive is mainly observed in children when their rate of weight gain is below the standard growth compared to children of the same age and sex. In children with a failure to thrive condition, physical skills like sitting, standing, walking, secondary sexual characteristics, mental and social skills are affected and they develop slowly compared to other children. A wide range of factors are responsible for causing failure to thrive condition such as defects in major organ systems, chromosome abnormalities such as turner's syndrome and down syndrome, damage to the brain or central nervous system, anemia or blood disorders, which can cause difficulty in feeding an infant, long-term gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal problems that result in malabsorption, cerebral palsy, metabolic disorders, low birth weight and complications of pregnancy. The other factors causing failure to thrive are situations like emotional deprivation as a result of parental withdrawal, rejection or hostility.
