Psoriasis is an overactivity of the immune system that causes skin cells to multiply rapidly. The condition can cause excess skin to appear on the body, usually on the head, knees, or elbows. It may also cause skin inflammation, itching, burning sensations, or bleeding. A family history of psoriasis, obesity, and smoking increases the risk of developing this autoimmune disease. It is not contagious, but it is chronic, so the symptoms must be managed during flare-ups. Managing triggers like stress and injuries can help avoid flare-ups. Psoriasis is of many types, and each type affects the skin in different ways. For instance, plaque psoriasis causes inflamed patches to appear with scales of excess skin cells to appear. In contrast, pustular psoriasis leads to the development of pus-filled bumps along with inflammation. Relief from mild psoriasis is possible with ointments. However, in severe cases, oral medication or injections may be required.
