Ulcerative Colitis :
Ulcerative colitis is described as a chronic condition that causes ulcers in the colon of the large intestine and is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. Based on the extent of spread, ulcerative colitis is classified into several types such as ulcerative proctitis, inflammation affecting rectum and sigmoid colon, left-sided colitis and pancolitis. Ulcerative colitis occurs because of an overactive immune response towards the body, causing tissue damage and inflammation. The symptoms of ulcerative colitis include diarrhoea, increased bowel movements or episodes of diarrhoea, urgent bowel movements, tenesmus, mild abdominal cramping or tenderness, frequent bowel movements or episodes of diarrhoea, blood, pus or mucus in the stool, fatigue, severe belly cramping, fever, nausea and sudden weight loss. The treatment modalities to manage ulcerative colitis include medications like aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and biologics and surgical procedures such as proctocolectomy and ileal pouch or proctocolectomy and ileostomy.
