Trachoma :
Trachoma is a bacterial infection where, at first, it starts with mild itching and irritation of the eyes and eyelids, followed by eye pain, and finally leads to blindness, which is irreversible. This disease mainly occurs in very crowded areas, with poor hygiene and a lack of clean water. It is a very common infection overall in the world. Spreads from person to person via direct and indirect routes. Symptoms include eye swelling, eye pain, light sensitivity, and blindness. It is mainly caused by bacteria known as chlamydia trachomatis and spreads from an infected person's discharges (like tears, liquid from the nose, and saliva) to a normal person. Culturing bacteria from collected samples can determine or confirm the diagnosis. Treatment typically includes Antibiotics like oral azithromycin, which is effective against trachoma and has a better outcome. In severe cases, surgery like corneal implantation is taken as a necessary step to stop the eye from complete blindness. Improving sanitation, hygiene, and clean water can help the population from trachoma infection.
