Can Skin Cancer be cured?

Skin cancer treatment can often cure skin cancer, especially when detected and treated early. The outcome and treatment options depend on the type of skin cancer, its stage, and other individual factors. Treatment outcomes of the 3 main types of skin cancers are as follows:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common type of skin cancer is slow-growing. It rarely spreads to other body parts, and treatment for BCC is usually highly successful, with a very high cure rate. Common treatments include surgical removal, topical creams, cryotherapy (freezing), and other minimally invasive procedures.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): More likely to spread to nearby lymph nodes and other body parts than BCC, although the risk is still low. Early-stage SCC is often curable with surgery or radiation therapy.
  • Melanoma: This is the most aggressive form of skin cancer and has a higher potential for spreading to other body parts if not detected and treated early. The prognosis for melanoma depends on the stage at which it is diagnosed. Early-stage melanomas limited to the skin have a high cure rate with surgical removal.

What are the Best Treatments for Skin Cancer in Kolkata?

The best doctors for skin cancer treatment say that treatment options depend on the type of skin cancer, its stage, and its location on the body. Based on the cancer type, the treatments can be as follows:

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) Treatment:

  • Mohs Micrographic Surgery: For more extensive or high-risk BCCs, thin layers of tissue are removed one at a time, with immediate examination under a microscope to ensure complete cancer removal while sparing healthy tissue.
  • Electrodesiccation and Curettage (ED&C): Cancerous tissue is scraped away with a curette and cauterised with an electric needle.
  • Topical Medications: Superficial BCCs can be treated with prescription topical medications, such as imiquimod or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) cream.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) Treatment:

  • Mohs Micrographic Surgery: For SCCs located in critical areas or for more extensive, high-risk tumours.
  • Radiation Therapy: for SCCs that are not amenable to surgery.
  • Electrodesiccation and Curettage (ED&C): Used for small SCCs.

Melanoma Treatment:

  • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: To determine if cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes.
  • Immunotherapy: To stimulate the immune system to attack melanoma cells.
  • Radiation Therapy: For melanomas that cannot be surgically removed or for palliative care in advanced cases.

What are the warning signs of Skin Cancer?

Some general warning signs stated by the specialists for skin cancer treatment include:

Change in the Appearance of Moles or Birthmarks:

  • Asymmetry: One half of the mole or birthmark doesn't match the other half.
  • Irregular Borders: Edges need to be more well-defined and may be ragged, notched, or blurred.
  • Colour Changes: Not the same colour throughout or has multiple colours, such as brown, black, red, white, or blue.

New Skin Growths or Lesions: The appearance of new growths on the skin, especially if they are nodules, sores, or scaly patches. These growths may be pink, red, translucent, pearly, or brownish-black.

Change in Texture or Sensation: A lesion that becomes itchy, painful, or starts to bleed without a clear cause.

Wounds or Sores that Don't Heal: Non-healing sores, ulcers, or crusted areas persist for weeks or months.
