Sick sinus syndrome :
SSS or sick sinus syndrome is a heart disease in which the sinus node which is also known as the body's own pacing unit of the heart malfunctions and brings in irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias . This unit regulates the rate and rhythm of the heartbeat . In this disease the patient suffers from bradycardia, tachycardia, or rhythms that shift between slow and rapid . This disorder often occurs among old patients probably due to old age whereby the heart's electrical activity has grown weak . Other causes though include some drugs as well as certain heart diseases . Symptoms may include general weakness, dizziness, or breathlessness, and chest pain, dizziness and also loss of consciousness occasionally .The diagnosis is usually done through an ECG or Holter monitor. These are devices used to test heart rhythm for a period. Treatment for sick sinus syndrome includes implantation of a pacemaker .The type of pace maker would be suggested by a cardiologist or an electrophysiologist depending upon the rhythm.
