Renal Angioplasty :

Renal angioplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to treat renal artery blockage. It is clinically termed as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of renal artery. It is performed when the renal artery is damaged with conditions like renal artery stenosis, renal hypertension, restricted blood flow due to medication side-effects. This procedure is previously evaluated by renal angiogram to estimate the location of blockage in the renal artery. It is performed under the care of Cardiologist. In this process, after initial sedative procedures a needle is inserted in the sterilized groin area with a guide wire which can be observed on the x-ray monitor. After successful establishment of this route, needle is removed and replaced by catheter through the wire, being directed to the blockage in the renal artery which can be identified with help of a contrast dye. At the site of blockage, the deflated balloon attached to the catheter is inflated to clear the restriction and stent is placed to widened the artery. Once the stent is intact and confirmed with the x-ray monitor, the balloon is deflated and removed along with the catheter.
