Rectal Prolapse :

Rectal prolapse (RP) is a condition in which where apart of the rectum protrudes from the anus , often due to weakened pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. It occurs due to old age (geriatric), after childbirth, surgery ,weak pelvic floor muscles, constipation and straining during bowel movements, spinal cord injuries, PD, obesity, smoking are some risk factors. There are different types of rectal prolapse ie., full thickness RP, external RP, internal RP, circumferential RP, segmental RP , mucosal RP etc.

Signs and symptoms of Rectal prolapse include a bulge or lump near the anus, discomfort or pain during bowel movements, difficulty passing stool or gas, incontinence or leakage of stool or mucus of the rectum, bleeding or discharge from the rectum, feeling of incomplete evacuation. Diagnosis is done by physical examination (including rectal examination), imaging like CT, MRI etc, videodefecography , anorectal manometry etc., Most external prolapse can be treated successfully often with a surgical procedure. Internal prolapse are usually harder to treat and surgery might not be suitable in many patients.
