PUO :

PUO is defined as Pyrexia of unknown origin or also called as fever of unknown origin. PUO is defined as raise in body temperature for a prolonged duration I.e more than 3 weeks or recurrent fever without any definitive explanation. Despite numerous investigations by one or more health care professionals the exact origin remains unknown. PUO is classified into different types based on its onset and occurance namely Classical PUO disease, Nosocomial PUO disease, Immune deficient or Neutropenic PUO disease, and HIV-associated PUO disease.

The causes of Pyrexia of unknown origin - PUO are categorized into 4 different types namely :

Infectious which accounts for about 17 -35% of the overall cases of PUO , brought by fungus,bacteria virus and other organisms. Examples : Tuberculosis, endocarditis, cat scratch disease, lyme disease etc

Non- infectious Inflammatory disease: These account for about 24 -36 % of the cases. Examples: Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease etc.

Neoplastic contributes to 10% of the over all cases. For example pancreatic carcinoma, lymphoma, leukemia, and other cancers

Miscellaneous: fevers caused by drug abused and hyperthyroidism etc .
