Nephrectomy :

Nephrectomy is a surgical procedure which involves removal of partial or complete, one or both the kidney. It is mostly done in cases of carcinoma of kidney, non cancerous tumors of kidney and during kidney failure and transplantation. It can be done as both open surgery and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. During surgery the patient is given general anesthesia, a large incision is made if it is an open surgery and 3- 4 small cuts are enough for laparoscopic surgery. They use several surgical tools to remove a part or complete kidney. Then stitches are given to prevent bleeding and allow it to heal. This procedure can be a life saving one for people who are suffering from cancerous condition of kidney. However, the procedure has its own potential risks and complications. Recovery time may take as long as six weeks, regular health checkups may be required to monitor the kidney function.
