Mole Removal :
Mole removal is a procedure which involves shaving or cutting a mole from the skin if it looks atypical or for cosmetic purposes. This is performed by a dermatologist as an outpatient procedure. After removing atypical moles, they are sent to laboratory for to check if there is an underlying abnormality. Mole removal can be done using two techniques, namely, surgical excision and shave excision. Surgical excision is done with a scalpel to separate the mole from the rest of the skin and then stitching the region back. Shave excision is performed by shaving the growth off to the level of skin around it using a bladed razor. In the next step, to improve the appearance of a scar, the area around the removed mole is lightly burned. Shave excision doesn't help in identifying the type of skin cancer and is also not used to look at deep tumor margins. The disadvantages of mole removal procedure are scarring, bleeding, nerve damage, recurrence of the mole and infection.
