Mitral valve Repair / Replacement :

Mitral valve repair/replacement surgery is performed by cardiosurgeons in patients with mitral valve diseases which include mitral valve stenosis, prolapse and regurgitation. The preferred choice of procedure to treat the mitral valve abnormality is to retain the individual's mitral valve by repairing with various surgical techniques like annuloplasty based on the extent of damage involved. In severe cases, the damaged mitral valve requires replacement with artificial valves. Post the repair/replacement of the valve the surgeons estimate the functioning and the response of the mitral valve by performing transesophageal echocardiogram. The patient is then monitored in ICU followed by cardiac rehabilitation. There are potential complications associated with the surgery which can lead to development of other cardiac issues. Through surveillance is deemed essential in such cases. The patient is advised to stick with the instructed protocol.
