Lump in the Neck :

Lump in the Neck is a visible and palpable solid mass present in the neck and has many underlying causes. Few common causes in children are swollen lymph nodes, bacterial or viral infection of salivary glands, branchial cleft cyst, Tonsillitis, Rubella, thyroglossal cyst, etc. Where as in adults Goiter, Thyroid nodules, Hodgkin's and non Hodgkin's lymphoma, Thyroid cancer, Throat cancer, Lipoma, Infectious mononucleosis can cause lump in the neck.

Physical examination through oto rhino laryngoscopy, Blood test, imaging techniques like x-ray, USG, MRI and fine needle aspiration for biopsy can give an accurate cause for the lump. Lump in neck is often associated with symptoms like difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness in voice, cough, restriction in range of movements of neck. Your treatment will be based on the diagnosis, symptoms and history. In most of the infections anti-biotic therapy and enough but in case of cancers radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be required.
